OFFICIAL PAGE    PÁGINA OFICIAL

The EMDR Therapy Butterfly Hug (BH) method for self-administered bilateral stimulation (BLS) was developed by Lucina (Lucy) Artigas during her work with survivors of Hurricane Pauline in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1998. In 2000, Lucy received the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) Creative Innovation Award for developing the BH method.

“After guiding the survivors of Hurricane Paulina through a technique called the Light Stream, Nacho asked me to bring the exercise to a close. I found myself playing with a four-year-old boy so his mother could focus. Between laughter and spontaneous hugs, he heard Nacho’s voice, stopped, looked up at me, and asked, “When you go back home, who’s going to hug me?”

Without taking my eyes off him, I stood up, winked at him, and said, "Watch me!”

Then, standing in the middle of that circle of people, I imagined him resting against my chest, held gently in my crossed arms. In that simple gesture, the Butterfly Hug was born.”

-Lucina (Lucy) Artigas. Acapulco, Mexico, 1998.

-Lucina (Lucy) Artigas. Acapulco, México, 1998.

Lucy Artigas (the BH originator) believes that the BH is acceptable around the world because children, adolescents, and adults all have  a HUMAN BODY in common, that is sensitive and grateful to the security provided by the warm feeling of the hands-on the chest ... Hands that gently touch the specific area where our heart is when crossing. The heart is grateful to receive the alternating ‘flapping’ of the hands…

This is not a ritual, nor a prayer, though it holds elements of both. It’s a technique—a gesture of gentle repetition used by trauma therapists worldwide. It’s called the Butterfly Hug.
